Amberley Castle is located in the West Sussex community of Amberley. A rhomboid-shaped stonework enclosure with high curtain walls, interior towers in each corner, a hall, and an entrance was given to the castle, which was constructed as a manor residence in the 12th century and fortified in 1377. The Chichester bishops used it as a fortification. Currently operating as a privately owned hotel, the walls, gateway, and two of the towers are still Grade I listed building. In AD 683, Caedwalla of Wessex gave the See of Selsey the land on which the castle now sits. Following the Norman invasion, the bishopric was moved to Chichester, where it remained under the control of the Chichester Bishops. Bishop Ralph de Luffa constructed a timber-framed lodge in 1103, which is the earliest known construction. When Bishop Seffrid I demolished this in 1140, a more ornate stone hall took its place, and in 1200, Bishop Seffrid II erected the East Wing. Between 1305 and 1337, Bishop John Langton expanded the Great Hall. Bishop William Reade ordered a grander Great Hall to be built in its place. Fearing a French invasion of south coast of England at the start of the Hundred Years War in 1377, the bishop requested and was granted permission to fortify the location and erect the gatehouse and oubliette. The last Bishop of Chichester to occupy the castle was Bishop Robert Sherborne, who passed away in 1536. Following his death, the castle was leased to several tenants. During the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell ordered General William Waller to attack the castle because of the Royalist tenant. As a result, the Great Hall was destroyed and 20 feet of the castle-wall height was lost. Following the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, the castle was returned to the Bishop of Chichester after having been sold to a Mr. Butler. The Briscoes and Butlers continued to be tenants. #History #Architecture #Castles
