In western Highlands of Scotland, Eilean Donan is a little tidal island located around one kilometer from the village of Dornie at the meeting point of three sea lochs. It is dominated by a charming castle that is commonly featured in movies, TV shows, and photography. A footbridge that was built early in the 20th century connects it to the mainland. Constructed in the thirteenth century, the first castle of the island served as a stronghold for the Clan Mackenzie and their allies, the Clan MacRae. Government ships razed the castle in 1719 as a result of the Mackenzie-role in the Jacobite uprisings at the beginning of the 18th century. The current castle was rebuilt in the 20th century by Lieutenant-Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap. Much of the island was surrounded by a massive curtain-wall castle that was built during the rule of Alexander II in the earlier thirteenth century. The region around the island was at the border between the Earldom of Ross and the Norse-Celtic Lordship of the Isles at this period, and Eilean Donan offered a robust defense against Norse incursions. According to a foundation legend, the son of a Matheson chief developed the ability to converse with birds. As a result, and following numerous overseas adventures, he amassed wealth, influence, and the admiration of Alexander II, who asked him to construct the castle to protect his domain. The Mackenzies of Kintail, who were once vassals of William I, Earl of Ross, later took control of the island. Macraes and Maclennans, two clans who would subsequently become intimately affiliated with the Mackenzies, are reported to have garrisoned the castle at this early stage. According to traditional Mackenzie clan legends, Earl William asked that his kinsman Kenneth Mackenzie surrender the castle so that he may expand into the islands. This was done in an attempt to take advantage of the Treaty of Perth, which was signed in 1266 and saw King Magnus VI of Norway transfer the Hebrides to Scotland. Earl William led an attack on Eilean Donan, which the Mackenzies and their allies repelled after Mackenzie declined. The Kintail National Scenic Area, one of 40 in Scotland, includes Eilean Donan. #History#Architecture#Castles
