Clitheroe Castle is an early medieval ruin located in Lancashire, England. The large estate that ran along the western side of the Pennines was the caput of the Honour of Clitheroe. Although its exact origins are up for question, it is generally accepted to be Norman in origin and most likely constructed in the twelfth century. The honor, which belonged to the de Lacy family, subsequently amalgamated with the Earldom and subsequently the Duchy of Lancaster. The castle site was privately owned until 1920, when it was sold to the people of Clitheroe for the construction of a war memorial. It had been given to George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle in 1660. The Clitheroe Castle Museum now occupies the buildings on the property. It is second-smallest surviving stone-built keep in England. The Domesday Book of 1086 reveals that Roger of Poitou had given the Anglo-Saxon hundred of Blackburnshire to Roger de Busli and Albert de Gresle as part of a fief following the Norman Conquest. Since Clitheroe is not specifically stated, it is thought that Blackburn served as the administrative hub in the past. However, Poitou granted Robert de Lacy, the Baron of Pontefract, Blackburnshire and the Bowland region north of the River Ribble at some point during rule of William Rufus. Henry I not only permitted de Lacy to retain these properties after de Poitou lost his English holdings in 1102, but he also added the vills of Chipping, Aighton, and Dutton. The focus of this new honor was Clitheroe. For many years, the River Ribble valley has served as an important transportation route. Just south of the castle site is a Roman road that climbs it. In order to effectively restrict the route and offer sweeping views of the surrounding area, the 39-meter-high limestone rock is strategically located. #History #Architecture #Castles
