Located in Ludgershall, Wiltshire, England, Ludgershall Castle is a ruined fortified royal castle from the 12th century. The castle, which Henry III converted into a hunting lodge but had abandoned by the 15th century, still has three sizable walls. In 1981, the ruin was added to the list of scheduled monuments. Although a private residence is located on a portion of the site, extensive earthworks are still present. Quarrying has significantly changed the earthworks. It is believed that the southern enclosure, which is located inside them and at the other end of the site from the standing walls, was a stronghold during the Iron Age. Edward of Salisbury, the sheriff of Wiltshire, most likely constructed the earliest medieval castle in the late eleventh century. John the Marshal was listed as the castellan of the king, as by 1100 it had passed into the control of the Crown. In addition to strengthening it, he might have erected the northern enclosure, which housed the principal structures, most of which were made of stone and included a great hall and a tower housing the royal residence. The bailey, which included timber farm buildings, kitchens, and stables, was the southern enclosure. Henry III visited the castle at least 21 times between 1234 and 1251, adding the great hall in 1244 and making other changes. King John had already converted the castle into a hunting lodge in 1210. Throughout the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle function decreased, and by the 1540s, the most of its ruins had been destroyed. The remaining tower from the 12th century was preserved as a garden element when the ground was leveled to create a garden. Until the Reform Act 1832, Ludgershall, a more significant location in medieval England than it is today, was able to send two members to Parliament. The University of Southampton conducted the initial excavation of the site between 1964 and 1972. In 1981, the ruin was added to the list of scheduled monuments. #History #Architecture #Castles
