Medininkai Castle, is a medieval castle in Vilnius district, eastern Lithuania. Castle was built in the early half of the 14th century. The castle, which had a defensive perimeter of 6.5 hectares, is the biggest enclosure-style fortress in Lithuania and among the biggest in Central and North-Eastern Europe. It was constructed for flank defense on level terrain. The rectangular castle-yard covered approximately 1.8 hectares and was protected by walls 15 metres high and 2 metres thick. The castle featured four towers and gates. The walls and towers of the shell building are formed of field stones and bricks in the Baltic brick bonding method. The castle shares structural similarities with Lida, Kreva, and Kaunas castles. According to the Chronicon terrae Prussiae chronicle, Medininkai Castle was first built in 1311. The castle was probably first constructed of wood and then modified for frontal defense. The Grand Duke Algirdas most likely constructed the present brick and stone castle in the late 14th century. The local populace used the castle as a haven during raids by Teutonic Knights and Tatars. However, in 1402, the forces of Teutonic Knights, along with the future Grand Duke of Lithuania Švitrigaila, besieged and destroyed the castle. As a result, it was no longer used as a defensive structure, though Grand Duke Vytautas the Great did not completely abandon it and made multiple visits. The Grand Duke of Lithuania and the King of Poland, Casimir IV Jagiellon, used the castle as their summer home. The children of the monarch and Jan Dlugosz, their tutor, also frequently traveled to Medininkai. The castle was progressively abandoned starting in the late 15th century after several fires, the most notable of which took place in the early 16th century. This kind of castle was eventually employed as a residential castle as it was no longer appropriate for defensive use due to the rise in the use of fire arms. It was restructured as a farm and bakery in the 17th and 18th centuries. Up until the early 20th century, the wooden buildings that made up the Medininkai Manor were moved and remained in the castle courtyard. #History #Architecture #Castles
