The English city of York is home to the fortified complex known as York Castle. Built over the course of the last nine centuries on the south side of the River Foss, it is made up of a series of castles, jails, courts, and other structures. Cliffords Tower is the name given to the now-ruined keep of the medieval Norman castle. The castle had a turbulent early history before becoming a significant stronghold with extensive water defenses. It was first built on the orders of William I to control the former Viking city of Jórvík. The surviving military defenses were rendered unusable by a significant explosion in 1684, although York Castle remained a gaol and prison until 1929. By the 15th and 16th centuries, York Castle was in poor condition and was increasingly being utilized as a gaol for political prisoners as well as local criminals. Although the castle was thought to have lost all of its military significance by the reign of Elizabeth I, it continued to serve as seat of royal power of York. When the English Civil War broke out in 1642, York Castle was restored and reinforced, which helped the Royalists defend York against Parliamentary forces in 1644. York Castle was garrisoned until 1684, when the keep-interior was devastated by an explosion. In the 18th century, the castle bailey was renovated in a neoclassical manner to serve as county administration of Yorkshire. Additionally, it was also continued to be used as a gaol. A new Tudor Gothic styled prison was constructed on the castle site in 1825 as a result of 19th-century prison reform; it was dismantled in 1935 after serving as a county prison and a military prison. The remains of the keep were a popular tourist attraction and national monument by the 20th century; it is currently held by English Heritage and accessible to the public. The Crown Court and the York Castle Museum are housed in the remaining structures. #History #Architecture #Castles
