South-east of Lamberhurst, in the River Bewl valley in Kent, England, sits Scotney Castle, a country house with formal gardens. The National Trust manages it. Lambert de Scoteni is listed as the estate-owner in the earliest document, which dates to 1137. The castle was built by Roger Ashburnham between 1378 and 1380. A roughly rectangular fortified home with towers in each corner was the first design for the castle. It is possible that the original concept was never completed, and by 1558, just the southern tower was probably still standing. Around 1630, the eastern range was reconstructed in the three-story Inigo Jones style, while the south wing was erected in the Elizabethan architectural style in 1580. When the new house was completed in 1843, the eastern range was partially removed, leaving the ruin as a garden feature. The Elizabethan wing was still used as a bailiff-dwelling until 1905. Open to the public, the gardens are a renowned example of the picturesque style and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The main attraction is Scotney Old Castle, the remnants of a medieval, moated manor house situated on an island in a small lake. Sloping, woodland gardens encircle the lake, with exquisite collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, and kalmia for springtime color, summer wisteria and roses, and breathtaking autumn hues. The mansion at the top of the garden was constructed between 1835 and 1843 to replace the Old Castle. This was created by Anthony Salvin and is referred to as Scotney New Castle or just Scotney Castle. It is an early example of Tudor Revival architecture in 19th-century Britain that is remarkably austere. After Elizabeth Hussey, the resident, passed away in 2006, this residence was initially made public on June 6, 2007. #History #Architecture #Castles
