Berkshire, about north of the town of Newbury, lies the ruined medieval castle known as Donnington Castle. Before the castle came under royal hands during the Tudor era, Thomas Chaucer purchased it after Sir Richard Abberbury the Elder erected it in 1386. The royalist Sir John Boys occupied the castle during the First English Civil War, and it survived an 18-month siege. In 1646, Parliament decided to demolish Donnington Castle after the garrison finally gave up. The gatehouse is all that remains. The location is under the care of English Heritage as a scheduled monument. The Abberbury family had controlled the manor of Donnington since 1292. Sir Richard Abberbury the Elder was the original owner of Donnington Castle, which he constructed with licence from Richard II in 1386. This is when the castle gatehouse that is still standing was built. Thomas Chaucer, the son of poet Geoffrey Chaucer, purchased the castle in 1398 to house his daughter Alice, who would go on to become the Duchess of Suffolk. William De La Pole, Duke of Suffolk, occasionally lived in Donnington and significantly expanded the structures. The castle later became a royal property after the family later fell out with the Tudor kings. Parliament decided to demolish the castle in 1646; only the gatehouse survived, although the earthworks from the 17th century are still visible. Originally constructed in a roughly rectangular shape, west facade of Donnington Castle jutted out irregularly. It had a round tower at each of its four corners and was surrounded by a curtain wall. Two square towers stood about midway along the two walls that ran west to east. There would have likely been a hall, kitchens, and guest quarters in the courtyard surrounded by the curtain walls. Currently under care of English Heritage, the castle is listed as a scheduled ancient monument with the number 1007926. #History #Architecture #Castles
