The 15th-century brick Herstmonceux Castle is located next to Herstmonceux in East Sussex, England. It is among the earliest notable brick structures of England that are still intact. The castle, which was constructed by Flanders craftsmen using bricks extracted from the local clay, was famous for being among the first structures in England to use that material. It was created in 1441. Sir Roger Fiennes, the previous owner of the property, started construction, and his son, Lord Dacre, carried on following his death in 1449. The first recorded record of the Herst settlement can be found in the Domesday Book of 1086 by William the Conqueror, which states that a man named Wilbert was given tenancy of the Herst manor by one of his closest followers. The family at the Herst manor house enjoyed a great deal of prestige by the end of the eleventh century. In the end, Herstmonceux Castle in the County of Sussex was built by Roger Fiennes, a descendent of the Monceux family. The building of the castle on the site of the ancient manor house started in 1441 because Sir Roger, who had been appointed Treasurer of the Household of Henry VI of England, required a home befitting a man of his rank. Because of his role as treasurer, he was able to pay £3,800 for the first castle-construction. Following the death of a gamekeeper due to poaching activities on a nearby estate in 1541, Sir Thomas Fiennes, Lord Dacre, was put on trial for murder and robbery of deer of the the King. Like a commoner, he was found guilty and hanged, and Henry VIII of England briefly seized the Herstmonceux estate before returning it to the Fiennes family under the reign of one of the children of Henry. The 15th Baron Dacre, the heir of Fiennes family, was compelled to sell to George Naylor in 1708 due to his recklessness. The castle remained a wreck until the early 20th century after it was finally dismantled in 1777, leaving just the outer walls intact. Colonel Claude Lowther started radical restoration work in 1913 to turn the ruined structure into a residence, and Sir Paul Latham finished the project in 1933 using a design by architect Walter Godfrey. The interiors that are currently in place are mostly from that era and include French and English architectural antiques. #History #Architecture #Castles
