Converted late-medieval gatehouse Affeton Castle is located close to East Worlington in Devon, England. Located on the side of a Little Dart River valley, it was once a part of the fortified manor house of Affeton, which was constructed by the Stucley family in approximately 1434. The gatehouse was in ruins by the early 19th century, while the manor house had been destroyed during the English Civil War in the 1640s. Between 1868 and 1869, Sir George Stucley, 1st Baronet, refurbished it to serve as a hunting lodge or shooting box. In 1956, Sir Dennis Stucley, 5th Baronet, used it as his private residence. The Stucley family constructed a large fortified manor house in about 1434, including Affeton Castle, out of grey rubble stone. Prior to being included into the parish of West Worlington, Affeton Manor had its own parish church. During the English Civil War, the manor house was nearly completely destroyed; the gatehouse was the sole structure that survived and eventually fell into ruin. The cellars and foundations of the manor house were covered by a sizable farmhouse called Affeton Barton. The ruined gatehouse was transformed into a shooting box for the Stucley family, who owned Hartland Abbey and Moreton House in Bideford, in 1868–1879; it was then renamed Affeton Castle. The castle is designated as a Grade II* listed building and is around 60 feet by 22 feet. #History #Architecture #Castles
