With a view of the River Eden, Appleby Castle is located in the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland. It is made up of a mansion house and Caesars Tower, a castle keep from the 12th century. These and the buildings that go with them are situated in a courtyard that is enclosed by curtain walls. Caesars Tower and the mansion house are both registered as Grade I buildings on the National Heritage List for England. The uninhabited portions of the castle are designated as an ancient monument. The fortress was established in the start of the 12th century by Ranulf le Meschin. Caesars Tower is a square stone keep that was constructed in 1170. When William the Lion, the king of Scotland, attacked the Eden Valley in 1174, the fortress was in royal hands. The castle-constable gave up without a struggle. King John gave the castle to Robert I de Vipont in 1203. Roger de Clifford acquired it around 1264 as a result of his marriage to Isabel de Vipont, one of the two daughters of Robert II de Vipont and co-heir. For almost 400 years, the Clifford family owned Appleby Castle, and they were largely in charge of its repair. In 1282, the castle was inherited by Robert de Clifford, son of Roger. The 13th century is when the north wall of the house and the west portion of the north wing with the circular tower were built. The eastern part of the house was erected around 1454. In 1617, King James I resided at the castle in between trips to Wharton Hall and Brougham Castle. Lady Anne Clifford moved into the castle in the middle of the 17th century. In 1648, during the Second English Civil War, roundhead soldiers besieged the fortress and partially destroyed it. But in 1651–1653, Lady Anne Clifford restored it. The Earls of Thanet inherited the castle after her death. The hall block was transformed into a classical mansion house by them. The 17th and 18th centuries saw changes to higher levels of Caesars Tower. The northwest wing was erected in 1695 after the building was mostly restored in 1686. Sash windows were added when it was restored once more in the 19th century. Denis Vernon, the CEO of Ferguson Industrial Holdings, and his family moved into the castle after the business bought it in 1973. Appleby Castle was the Vernons-home until 1990. Vernon founded a rare breeds survival center since he was an avid conservationist. In 1998, Christopher Nightingale purchased the castle. In 2009, Appleby Castle was fully owned by Mrs. Sally Nightingale. Public access to the castle and grounds is available during designated hours. The Norman Centre is an interactive museum located within the keep. #History #Architecture #Castles
