Located in the village of Chillingham in the northern region of Northumberland, England, Chillingham Castle is a medieval castle. From the 15th century until the 1980s, it was the home of the Grey and Bennet families. Later Sir Edward Humphry Tyrrell Wakefield, 2nd Baronet, who is married to a member of the original Grey family, resided there. The unique Chillingham cattle, which number around 130 white cattle, are kept in a sizable enclosed park on the castle grounds. The castle is categorized as a Grade I structure. Several buildings on the castle-grounds, in addition to the castle itself, are included on National Heritage List of England as Grade II buildings. They are the garden wall to the west, the gateway and garden wall to the north, the gateway and garden wall to the south-east, the garden wall to the west, and the West Lodge and gateway. Additionally designated as Grade II are two urns located in the Italian Garden. In the late 12th century, the castle was first a monastery. When King Edward I traveled to Scotland in 1298 to fight a Scottish army under William Wallace, he remained at the fortress. The king had a specifically installed glazed window in a frame, which was uncommon for such constructions at the period. Because it was situated on the border between two warring states, the castle held a strategically significant position during the Middle Ages. Although it served as a staging area for English troops entering Scotland, Scottish soldiers and southbound raiding bands frequently attacked and besieged it. There was a moat at the site, and the fortifications were 12 feet thick in some places. #Castles#History#Architecture
