Spofforth Castle, a fortified manor house in the village of Spofforth, North Yorkshire, England, was ruined during the English Civil War and is currently managed as a tourist destination by English Heritage. After being granted license to crenellate a manor house on the property in the early 14th century, Henry de Percy constructed Spofforth Castle. Later additions were erected in the 14th and 15th centuries. All that is left of the castle-ruins is the hall-tower. The eastern wall of the hall was constructed primarily on rock foundations. Because of its elevation, the ground-floor undercroft of the 13th-century building has a rock face forming its eastern side. There are still two staircases that lead to the lobby area of the hall on the eastern wall that are carved out of the rock. On the north side of the tower is a two-story chamber section with a polygonal stair turret at the northwest corner. The upper story was built in the fifteenth century and was most likely restored. Following the uprising against King Henry IV in 1408, the Percy estates—including Spofforth—were seized and turned over to Sir Thomas Rokeby. Later, when the Percys sided with the losing side in the War of the Roses in 1461, they were lost once more. Eventually, Spofforth was given back to the family, and until 1604, it was occupied by Sampson Ingleby, their steward and the father of Sir William and Jane Ingleby. During the English Civil War, 1642–1646, the castle was destroyed. In 1924, the 3rd Baron Leconfield gave the castle to the Office of Works. Under the guardianship of English Heritage, the ruins—mostly the west side of the medieval castle—are now a grade II* listed building and a popular tourist destination. The Spofforth-with-Stockeld Parish Council is in charge of overseeing them. #History #Architecture #Castles
