Throughout the Second and Third Ages, the Nazgûl—also referred to as the Black Riders or just The Nine—were the terrifying ring-servants of Dark Lord Sauron in Middle-earth. In the latter years of the Third Age, they lived in Minas Morgul and Dol Guldur. Celebrimbor created the nineteen Rings of Power in Eregion. Sixteen of these were taken by Sauron, but the rest were kept in one of the safes of Eregion. Nine of them, were given to great lords and warriors of Men by him, including three Númenóreans and one Easterling monarch. Control of Sauron over the rings allowed him to successfully corrupt the Nine. The Rings continued to have a corrupting effect throughout time, despite the fact that these Nine exploited them to gain enormous power, wealth, and prestige in their lives. Ultimately, the Rings subjugated their carriers to the will of Sauron and made them invisible to everyone except those who could see into the wraith world. The One Ring connected their life and their abilities to Sauron; the Nazgûl expanded or shrank with Sauron. A thousand years before the Downfall, three of the Ringwraiths may have been among the first and most influential Númenóreans to be corrupted by Sauron. They worshipped Sauron and fell victim to his schemes because to their desire for knowledge or power. Of the Nine, only two were ever named: Khamûl the Easterling and the Witch-king of Angmar.
