Celebrindal, another name for Idril, was a Ñoldorin Elf of Gondolin. She was the wife of the Man Tuor, the daughter of Turgon and Elenwë, and the mother of the Half-elven Eärendil the Mariner. Turgon, whose wife Elenwë died at the Helcaraxë crossing, had only one child, Idril Celebrindal. She was one of the two Ñoldor of the third generation to be exiled, along with Orodreth the son of Angrod. Her cousin Maeglin, the son of Eöl the Dark Elf and Aredhel, sister of Turgon, secretly harbored feelings for Idril, but she rejected his approaches due to his sinister nature and their close familial ties. Idril fell in love with Tuor, son of Huor, when he came to Gondolin. Turgon permitted Idril and Tuor to marry because he had grown to love Tuor as a son, making this the second union of Men and Elves after Beren and Lúthien. Soon later, their son Eärendil was born. Being far-sighted and seeing danger, she urged Tuor to set up a covert passage beneath the city so that survivors might securely flee in the event of an invasion. Idril and Tuor took charge of the exiles at the Mouths of Sirion in West Beleriand, near Arvernien, following the Fall of Gondolin. It was there that they also took in daughterof Dior Elwing. When Tuor was old, he went to the West with Idril aboard his ship. The Dúnedain and Elves think that Idril and Tuor made it to Valinor without any incident, avoiding the Ban of the Valar. Furthermore, Tuor was believed to be a member of the kindred of the Elves, and Idril and her spouse later lived in Valinor.
