Ancalagon The Black was the greatest of all winged dragon. He was the biggest dragon to have ever lived in Middle-earth, having been raised by Morgoth during the First Age. His historical presence was limited to the War of Wrath. After Eärendil made his journey to Valinor to encourage the Valar to topple Morgoth and rescue the outmatched and beaten Elves and Edain, the Host of Valinor made war upon Morgoth and decimated his forces. In the dying moments of his life, Morgoth unleashed his most powerful weapon — a fleet of flying fire drakes under the command of Ancalagon. Their approach was reported to have been accompanied by tremendous thunder, lightning, and a storm of fire. Their assault was so fierce that the forces of the Valar were forced to retreat from the gates of Angband. However, Eärendil emerged from the West in his hallowed vessel, Vingilot, escorted by a myriad of Eagles of Manwë under the command of Thorondor. For a day, Ancalagon and the other dragons engaged in combat with the Eagles and Eärendil. Ultimately, Ancalagon was flung down upon Thangorodrim by Eärendil, who triumphed, destroying the volcanic mountains in the process. The last of the resistance of Morgoth came to an end with death of Ancalagon.
