The 14th-century granite stone building known as Carn Brea Castle in Cornwall, England was extensively renovated in the 18th century to serve as a hunting lodge for the Basset family in the manner of a castle. It is now a grade II listed property. The building is used as a restaurant by private individuals. The castle is a tiny stone folly that has been romantically embellished in the gothic, medieval style. With an embattled parapet and four rectangular turrets encircling a core of equal height, the layout is irregular. The structure has a steep drop at the back and is set into a sizable stone outcrop. The building, which is 60 by 10 feet, was intended as a hunting lodge rather than a home. Originally constructed as a church in 1379, the castle was believed to be devoted to St. Michael. William Worcester, an antiquarian, noted that the Cornish peninsula had thirty-two castles, including Carn Brea, which he described as a tower. Later, the Basset family restored the castle significantly as a hunting lodge, mostly in the 18th century. It is so regarded as foolish, because the large uncut boulders that form part of its foundations, give the impression that the building is melting into the ground. In 1898, its usage as a ship beacon was documented when the lease required the tenant to display a light in the window facing north. #History #Architecture #Castles
