In Rome, Italy, the Pantheon was once a Roman temple and is now a Catholic church as of AD 609. It was constructed on the site of a previous temple that Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa had ordered constructed during the time of Augustus, 27 BC–AD 14. The first temple was destroyed by fire, and the current one was ordered by the emperor Hadrian and likely consecrated about AD 126. The name Pantheon is from the Ancient Greek word -- Pantheion -- meaning --- of, relating to, or common to all the gods. Because Hadrian decided to preserve the inscription of the older temple of Agrippa instead of inscribing the new one, the building date of the structure remains unclear. The structure is round in shape, with the exception of the portico with massive granite Corinthian columns under a pediment. The rotunda, which is beneath a coffered concrete dome and has a central aperture or oculus to the sky, is connected to the porch by a rectangular vestibule. The Pantheon-dome remains the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world, even after it was constructed nearly two millennia ago. Both the circumference and the oculus-height of the internal circle measure 43 meters. Its continued use over the course of its existence has contributed significantly to its preservation as one of the best-preserved Ancient Roman buildings. It has been a church honoring St. Mary and the Martyrs since the 7th century. Piazza della Rotonda is the name of the plaza in front of the Pantheon. Roman architecture was typified by the huge circular domed cella of the Pantheon with a traditional temple portico front. However, when classical styles were resurrected, it became the standard example and was frequently imitated by other architects. #History #Architecture
