Located near the mouth of the Wadi Lebda on the Mediterranean, Leptis, also known as Lepcis Magna, was a major city of the Carthaginian Empire and Roman Libya. Originally founded as a Punic community about 500 BC, the city saw phenomenal development under the reign of Septimius Severus, the Roman Emperor who ruled from 193 to 211 AD and was born in the city. Here, the 3rd Augustan Legion was positioned to protect the city from attacks by Berbers. In the latter part of the third century, the city became more vulnerable to assaults following the collapse of the legion under Gordian III in 238. After Diocletian restored the position of the city as the provincial capital, it prospered once more until the Vandals destroyed it in 439. After being reincorporated into the Eastern Empire in 533, it never attained its previous prominence due to Berber incursions. Buried beneath layers of sand dunes, the city was amazingly intact after it was abandoned. During occupation of Libya by Italy in the 1920s, Italian archaeologists discovered the city. Its ruins are located 130 kilometers east of Tripoli in what is now Khoms, Libya. These are some of the best-preserved Roman sites of Mediterranean. #History #Architecture
