Situated in the commune of Carrouges, in the department of Orne, in the northern region of France, lies the Château de Carrouges, a chateau that partially dates back to the 14th century. It is unique in that it combines a cozy home with an imposing fortification. During the Hundred Years War, English armies besieged and destroyed the original Carrouges defenses. The grand seneschal of Normandy, Jean Blosset, restored the château in the fifteenth century following the conflict. The château was acquired by the Le Veneur de Tillières family in the sixteenth century. Up until the 17th century, it underwent multiple extensions, during which the great apartments, the western bastion, and a gatehouse were added. When the music room was constructed in the eighteenth century, the interior was remodeled. The château was rebuilt in 1944 after the last Le Veneur sold it to the French government. It is accessible to the public and is currently run by the Centre des monuments nationaux. Originally an oppidum, or defensive hill town, Carrouges was besieged in vain by the Plantagenets in 1136 and was at the southernmost point of Norman duchy of William the Conqueror. At the start of the Hundred Years War, in 1367, it was destroyed by the English. A vassal of Pierre II, Count of Alençon, Jean de Carrouges rose to prominence in 1386 as one of the participants in the final legal duel ever allowed in France. He was made a knight of honor by Charles VI after his triumph. Guillaume Blosset married the heiress of Jean de Carrouges, and their son Jean Blosset became grand seneschal of Normandy. He married two affluent Brittany heiresses, both of whom turned out to be advantageous. Through these partnerships, Blosset was able to rebuild and extend the château, which had been severely damaged when Henry VI of England took it after the Battle of Verneuil in 1424. King Louis XI was lodged in the northeastern wing of the château, which Blosset constructed, on August 11, 1473. #Castles #History #Architecture
