In ancient Rome, there were public baths known as the Baths of Diocletian. The largest of the imperial baths, they were constructed between AD 298 and 306, and were named for the emperor Diocletian. Maximian began the project when he first returned to Rome in the fall of 298 and it was carried on under the reign of father of Constantine, Constantius, following his abdication and that of Diocletian. The baths were in operation until the Ostrogoths severed the aqueducts that supplied the city of Rome in 537. The site is home to the Church of San Bernardo alle Terme, a portion of the National Roman Museum, and the 16th-century Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri. Situated immediately inside the Agger of Servian Wall, the baths are situated on a high point on the northeast top of the Viminal, the smallest of Seven hills of Rome. They functioned as baths for the inhabitants of the Quirinal, Esquiline, and Viminal neighborhoods of the city. The Aqua Marcia, an aqueduct that had been serving Rome since the early 2nd century, provided the water supply. In AD 298 Maximian commissioned the baths in honor of Diocletian, a co-emperor, the same year he returned from Africa. Bricks from the main area of the bath, which clearly display Diocletianic era markings, provide evidence of this. The fact that the emperor oversaw and steered all of their labor is evidence of the impact of the project on the brick industry. Construction occurred between the year it was originally put into use and at some point between abdication of Diocletian in 305 and death of Constantius in July 306. #History #Architecture
