During the reigns of Constantius Chlorus and Constantine the Great, the Aula Palatina, also known as the Basilica of Constantine, is a Roman palace basilica located in Trier, Germany. It was constructed between AD 300 and 310. The Aula Palatina is distinct in that it has a transverse vestibule that resembles a narthex, even though it largely adheres to the traditional architectural layout of previous basilicas, including an open, box-like shape and no internal columns. The basilica had black-and-white marble flooring, a floor-and wall-heating system, and was constructed entirely of brick. The basilica was formerly a free-standing structure with other, smaller buildings attached to it as part of a palace complex. Despite the loss of the outer courtyard and the railings on the first and second storeys, the basilica remains astonishingly well preserved overall. The largest remaining ancient hall can be found in the basilica. As part of the Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter, and Church of Our Lady in Trier site, the Aula Palatina was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 due to its architectural significance and witness to imperial importance of Trier during the Roman Empire. #History#Architecture
