Emperor Augustus ordered the establishment of Augusta Emerita as a Roman colony in 25 BC in what is now Mérida, Spain. The colony was intended to act as a retreat for the experienced warriors of the legions V Alaudae and X Gemina. One of the most significant cities in Roman Hispania, it had all the conveniences of a big Roman city and was the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania from the time of its founding. In the fourth century, it also functioned as the headquarters of the entire Diocese of Hispania. In 409, a coalition of Central European tribes, including the Vandals, Alans, and Suebi, invaded Iberia. As a result, Augusta Emerita became the capital of the short-lived Kingdom of the Alans, ruled by King Attaces. Due to his untimely death in a battle against the Visigoths in 418, the neighboring Vandal state annexed the region. After being taken over by the Visigoths in 469, Mérida rose to prominence within the Gothic Kingdom. The Umayyad Caliphate took control of the city in 713, and continued to dominate it after that. The city started to slowly deteriorate in the ninth century when the Mozarabic population of the island rebelled against the Caliphate authorities on multiple occasions. In 1230, Alfonso IX of León took control of Mérida, which had supported Ibn Hud against the Almohad dynasty. It is today the ecclesiastical metropolitan seat of the Archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz, together with Badajoz. In 1983, it was designated as the seat of the Extremadura autonomous community. Since 1993, the archeological site of the city has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. #History #Architecture
