Circus Maximus in Rome, Italy is a historic Roman stadium used for chariot racing and other entertainment. It was the earliest and biggest stadium in ancient Rome and the later Roman Empire, located in the valley between the Aventine and Palatine hills. It could hold more than 150,000 spectators and was 621 meters long and 118 meters wide. When it was completed, it served as the template for circuses all around the Roman Empire. It is currently a public park. Circus Maximus served as the main location for ludi, or public sports related to religious festivals, in the city. For the good of the Roman people and Gods, ludi were supported by powerful Romans or the Roman government. On the Roman calendar, the majority were held yearly or at regular intervals. Others, like the games used to celebrate a victory, may be provided to fulfill a religious promise. According to Roman legend, Tarquin the Proud made a vow to Jupiter in the latter part of the Regal era for his victory over Pometia, which resulted in the first triumphal ludi at the Circus. Ludi took many different forms, from one-day or even half-day gatherings to grandiose multi-venue festivals spanning several days, with public feasts and religious ceremonies, athletic competitions, chariot and horse racing, plays and recitals, beast hunts, and gladiator combat. The grander ludi at the Circus got underway with a colorful parade akin to the triumphal procession, signifying the goal of the games and introducing the players. The games were arranged by the aediles during the Roman Republic. The most expensive and intricate of the ludi provided chances to evaluate the skill, charity, and suitability of an aedile for higher office. On the other hand, some Circus activities appear to have been more private and modest in scale. Others were enlarged to fill the entire space, at great cost. #History #Architecture
