The commune of Gratot, in the Manche département of Normandy, France, is home to the ruined medieval castle known as the château de Gratot. It has been listed by the French Government as a Monument historique. The English Channel is merely a few kilometers away. Constructed in the 14th century, the original Château de Gratot experienced numerous alterations until the 18th century. The Argouges family, barons of Gratot, built it; they sold the castle in 1771. The 18th-century pavilion is the most recent addition to the castle, which was constructed in a variety of architectural styles. During the 19th century, the castle was neglected and utilized by the nearby farmers as a storage facility for feed. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was finally abandoned. Thanks to the meticulous restoration work done by a group of volunteers, it has been regaining its former glory since 1968. The majority of the restoration work was done in the late 1960s and early 1970s, during which time tons of debris had to be removed from the ground floor and cellars and overgrowth had to be cleaned from the castle grounds. Since then, some structures—including two of the towers—have undergone reconstruction, and some of the buildings have even had their roofs replaced with wooden ones. Reconstruction works were guided by historical records and 19th-century images depicting the castle as a picturesque ruin. The 18th-century pavilion can now host exhibitions and cultural events because it has been completely renovated with a roof, floors, a staircase, windows, and electricity. The formal gardens are the focus of the most recent renovations; at this point, only the garden-outline is visible; there are no walkways or plants. #History #Architecture #Castles
