France, the Château de Falaise is a 12th–13th century castle situated south of the town of Falaise. The son of Duke Robert of Normandy, William the Conqueror, was born in approximately 1028 at a previous castle situated on the same site. After William conquered England and became king, the fortress was passed down through his heirs until King Philip II of France took possession of it in the thirteenth century. Throughout the Hundred Years War, the castle changed hands multiple times. The seventeenth century saw the castle being abandoned. It has been safeguarded as a historical monument since 1840. Following the passing of his father, Richard II, Duke of Normandy, in August 1026, his son inherited the duchy. Robert, the younger brother of Richard III, challenged the inheritance, nevertheless. Robert rebelled and took up arms against his brother, capturing the fortress of Falaise, because he was not satisfied with inheriting the town of Exmes and its environs. However, Robert was compelled to surrender to Richard after he besieged the castle. But Robert ascended to the throne of Normandy in 1027 following death of Richard from unspecified causes. Herleva, a daughter of a chamberlain from the town of Falaise, was the mother of an illegitimate son of Robert. About 1028 is when William, the child, was born. The castle, perched on a high rock overlooking the town, served as the residence of Normandy dukes at one point. Henry I of England began building the large keep on the site of a previous castle in 1123. The small keep was erected later. The tower, which dates to the first quarter of the twelfth century, was comparable to the towers at Corfe, Norwich, and Portchester in England in that it had a hall, chapel, and an apartment for the lord, but no smaller rooms for a complex family organization. Following his conquest of Normandy in or around 1207, Philip II Augustus gave the order to construct a new cylindrical fortress. Later on, it was dubbed the Talbot Tower.
