Built in the manner of a medieval fortress, Peckforton Castle is a Victorian country home. Situated a mile northwest of the community of Peckforton in Cheshire, England, it is situated amidst woodland near the northern tip of the Peckforton Hills. It is registered as a Grade I listed building on the National Heritage List for England. The mansion was constructed in the mid-1800s as the family residence of John Tollemache, a prosperous Cheshire landowner, estate manager, and parliamentarian. Anthony Salvin created it in the Gothic style. It served as a hostel for kids with physical disabilities during World War II. Up until 1969, the castle was only utilized for sporadic parties hosted by the Tollemache family. The 4th Lord Tollemache leased the castle to George W. Barrett from 1969 to 1980, during which time it was once more turned into a private home and was off-limits to the public. Barrett, an American working for the US government, repaired the right wing, the tower, and the castle grounds. The Archbishop of Canterbury had to issue a special decree in order for Catholic weddings to be lawfully performed on the castle grounds, and wedding of Pascale was the first to take place in the chapel. It served as a shooting location for movies and television shows in the 1970s and 1980s. Evelyn Graybill purchased the castle in 1988 and turned it into a hotel. After buying it in 2006, the Naylor family increased its usage by using it to hold conferences, weddings, and other events. #History #Architecture
