The Norman city of Caen of the Calvados département is home to the Château de Caen, a castle. Since 1997, it has held the official designation of Monument historique. William the Conqueror, who successfully invaded England in 1066, constructed the fortress around 1060. The church of Saint George and a fortification and substantial hall for the ducal Court were subsequently constructed by his son Henry I in 1123. At the Christmas celebration held in the Aula of Caen Castle in 1182, Henry II and his sons, John Lackland and Richard the Lionheart, were presented with over a thousand knights at the royal court. The French Crown regained control of Caen Castle and all of Normandy in 1204. Philip II strengthened the walls. Originally built atop a hillside, the castle is now located in the center of the city. It is one of the biggest castles in Western Europe, spanning 5.5 hectares. It continued to be a crucial component of Norman policy and strategy. Several battles took place in the castle during the Hundred Years War. The National Convention ordered the keep to be demolished in 1793 during the French Revolution. During World War II, the castle was used as barracks. It was severely damaged by bombing in 1944. In order to uncover evidence of the medieval past, Caen-based archaeologist Michel de Boüard made the decision to begin excavations around the castle in 1946. Installed in 1967, the Musée des Beaux-Arts opened its doors in 1971.
