The late medieval Forchtenstein Castle is located close to the Forchtenstein municipality in northern Burgenland, Austria. At 511 meters above sea level sits Forchtenstein Castle. Situated above the Wulka valley and south of Mattersburg sits the castle. The Lords of Mattersburg, who subsequently took the title Lords of Forchtenstein, constructed the first portion of the castle, which has a 50-meter-tall keep, around the start of the fifteenth century. Although the black granite that formerly lined the tower has since been removed, the castle still includes a tower known as the Black Tower. A 12-meter-deep pit in the tower serves as a death row prison cell for those who have been found guilty. The lack of a male heir caused the Lords of Forchtenstein to pass away around 1450, and the House of Habsburg inherited the castle for 170 years. They leased it to the Counts of Hardegg and Weissbriach, among others. Not much was modified to the building during this time. Emperor Ferdinand II gave Nikolaus Esterházy, the forefather of the western Hungarian Esterházy dynasty, the castle in 1622, and Esterházy was made a Count. Between 1630 and 1634, Nikolaus employed Vienna builder Simon Retacco to strengthen the collapsing castle, and starting in 1643, he worked with Domenico Carlone to renovate it. Together with architect Domenico Carlone, his son Paul expanded and embellished the castle during the latter part of the 17th century. The purpose of the castle was altered after the death of Paul. It turned into a storehouse for machinery, firearms, records, chronometers, and unique animal preparations. The treasure vault could only be accessed by a hidden passageway that led to a door that needed to be unlocked with two distinct keys combined. Over the whole of World War II, the treasure vault remained intact and unknown. The original glass-paned cabinets of the collection are artwork in itself. Together with Schloss Esterházy in Eisenstadt, the castle, which is still owned by the Esterházy family, documents the history and artifacts of this illustrious family from antiquity. #Castles #History #Architecture
