Located in the Croatian town of Senj, on the hill Nehaj, is the Nehaj Fortress. The Croatian phrase -- Ne hajati, which meaning -- do not care, is where the name Nehaj originates. The Uskok people gave this name to the hill and the fortress, which they constructed as a defensive stronghold atop the hill. They gave the hill and the fortress this name in order to stress to the locals of Senj and the surrounding areas that they should not be concerned that someone would take control of the hill or the fortress as long as they remain there. The square-shaped stronghold has walls that are 2 to 3 meters thick on average, measuring 18 meters high by 23 meters wide. The Fortress has eleven sizable gun apertures around its walls in addition to five towers above its walls. The Fortress is filled with exhibits of cannons and other home objects, along with a collection of armor of Senj Uskoks and weaponry. Senj also has a medieval festival every year, which includes a horse-drawn procession by the Uskoks up to the fortress. Along with a thorough history of the stronghold, there are currently craft studios and other medieval-themed attractions nearby. General Ivan Lenković of the Croatian army, a captain of the Uskoks, constructed the castle atop the hill Nehaj. Built atop the ruins of abandoned buildings, churches, and monasteries that were outside of fortifications of Senj, it was completed in 1558. These structures were demolished because it was determined that, should they be outside the city walls, the Ottomans would pillage them or use them as shelter during sieges, making it impossible for them to survive. The stronghold was primarily constructed to serve as a base for the Uskoks and to combat the Ottoman Empire. The fortress is mainly used as a museum these days.
