In Latvia, on the edge of the Gauja valley, lie the remnants of the Sigulda medieval castle. Originally constructed as a stronghold in the style of a castellum in 1207, the original castle was subsequently transformed into a convent. It became the home of the Land Marshal of the Livonian Order from 1432. The Livonian Brothers of the Sword, who later formed part of the Teutonic Order of the castle, constructed Sigulda Medieval Castle. As a result, the Livonian Order finally acquired ownership of the castle. German warrior monks made up the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, sometimes referred to as The Militia of Christ of Livonia. Their white capes had the emblems of a red sword and cross, which led to their eventual fame as the Livonian Brothers of the Sword. The order was the first warrior monk order to be established outside of the Mediterranean, having been founded in 1202. According to historical records, the order was co-founded by Cistercian abbot Theoderich and bishop Albert of Riga. The goal of the military command was to stay in Livonia in order to defend the region and annex new lands. The Rhymed Chronicles state that Master Venno of the Order of the Brethren of the Sword oversaw the construction of the castle, which took place between 1207 and 1209. According to Livonian Chronicle of Henry, the Brothers of the Sword used the fortress as a base to fight off invading Livonians who were revolting from a nearby castle. The original purpose of the castle was to keep an eye on and manage the waterways of the Gauja River as well as to repel any invasion attempts by the adjacent castle of the bishop in Turaida, which was situated on the west bank of the river. Wilhelm of Modena, the legate of the Pope, resided at the castle in 1224 and founded a parish and a church. The Teutonic Order acquired the estates of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword in 1237 and went on to capture further areas of Latvia until 1290. The old castle walls have undergone numerous fortifications over the 20th century due to their significance as a tourist destination. After reopening its gates to the public in 2012, the castle now invites everyone to travel back in time and enjoy the surroundings, which have seen many important historical moments. One can ascend the Main Gate Tower and the North Tower to take in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. #History #Architecture #Castles
