The market town of Framlingham, Suffolk, England is home to the Framlingham Castle. By 1148, an early Norman motte and bailey or ringwork castle had been constructed on the site of Framlingham; however, following the Revolt of 1173–1174, Henry II of England slighted it. The replacement built by Roger Bigod, the Earl of Norfolk, was unique for the period in that it used a curtain wall with thirteen mural towers to defend the castle-center rather than a central keep. Nevertheless, following a brief siege, King John captured the stronghold in 1216. Framlingham was transformed into an opulent residence by the end of the 13th century, with vast parklands surrounding it that were utilized for hunting. Framlingham was the center of the affluent Mowbray and Howard family-estates in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The castle, enlarged in stylish brick, was surrounded by two man-made meres. Having to maintain a big, affluent household, the castle imported luxury products from overseas markets and bought supplies from all around England. The older portions of the castle were renovated, and expansive pleasure gardens were added so that visitors may take in the newfound views. However, by the end of the 16th century, the castle was in poor condition, and the surrounding estates were sold off when Theophilus, the last owner of the Howard family, ran into financial difficulties. As a charitable gift, Framlingham Castle was granted to Pembroke College, Cambridge, in 1636, and it was owned by the college for about three centuries. The Castle is currently operated as a tourist destination and is overseen by English Heritage. As a scheduled monument and a Grade I listed building, it is safeguarded by British law. #History #Architecture #Castles
