One of the best preserved Norman motte and bailey castles of England is Totnes Castle. Situated in Devon, it is on the River Dart in the town of Totnes. The curtain wall and stone keep that are still standing are from the fourteenth century. The caput of the feudal barony of Totnes dates back to after the Norman Conquest in 1066. Perched atop a sizable hill above the town, the castle commands attention as it stands watch over three valleys. One of the lieutenants of William the Conqueror, the Breton Juhel of Totnes, is thought to have constructed the first fortress on this site. He was given the feudal barony of Totnes in 1068, and he built a fortification and established Totnes Priory inside the town to solidify his hold on the territory. This initial building most likely included a tower and a wooden fence. Juhel lost his holdings with the death of King William I, maybe as a result of his encouragement of the Rebellion of 1088. Roger de Nonant was therefore made the feudal baron of Totnes, and it seems that his family retained it for the following three generations. After that, William de Braose, 3rd Lord of Bramber, acquired it and is most likely the one who built the first stone shell keep and walls on the property. By 1326, the de la Zouch family had taken possession of the dilapidated castle. A royal decree was issued during this time to restore the defenses. Consequently, a stable was built, a constable was recruited, and the castle was re-fortified with a new shell keep made of Devonian limestone and red sandstone. It fell into ruin once more after the Wars of the Roses. During the Civil War, the castle was occupied for a while but saw little action. Let us fast-forward to 1485, when Totnes Castle was acquired by Sir Richard Edgecomb. Edward Seymour, the 9th Duke of Somerset, and his family finally moved into the castle in 1764. They added recreational amenities like a tennis court and a charming tea parlor during their stay, which increased the castle-appeal. #History #Architecture #Castles
