In Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire, England, there is a country house called Kimbolton Castle. It served as the last residence of Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of King Henry VIII. The Earls and Dukes of Manchester called this majestic palace—which had been transformed into a medieval castle—their home from 1615 until 1950. Kimbolton School is now housed there. Geoffrey Fitz Peter, 1st Earl of Essex, constructed the fortress in the latter part of the 12th century. In the latter part of the fifteenth century, Anne, Duchess of Buckingham, constructed the inner court. In 1522, Sir Richard Wingfield bought the castle. In April of 1534, Catherine of Aragon was sent here because she would not renounce her position or deny the legality of her marriage. A fool in the entourage of diplomat Eustache Chapuys attempted to cross the moat in July 1534 in an attempt to bring attention to her incarceration. Her health was harmed by the fenland climate, and on January 7, 1536, she passed away at the castle. In 1615, Sir Henry Montagu—later made the 1st Earl of Manchester — purchased the castle. Between 1690 and 1720, the 4th Earl of Manchester had numerous renovations completed. Among these projects was the reconstruction of the south wing, which had collapsed, according to a plan created by Sir John Vanbrugh. The gatehouse was designed by Robert Adam at the request of the 4th Duke of Manchester and built in 1766. The Montagu vault is situated beneath the North Chapel, and there are still a number of Montagu memorials in the South Chapel. Kimbolton School purchased the castle and its fifty acres in 1951 after the 10th Duke of Manchester sold its possessions in 1949. #Castles #History #Architecture
