A historic structure located in Rome, in the Roman Forum of Italy is the Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine, also referred to as the Basilica Nova. It was the final Roman basilica constructed in the city and the largest structure in the Forum. A basilica was a rectangular structure with a sizable open area in the center and frequently an elevated apse at the far end from the entrance in ancient Rome. Basilicas performed a number of purposes, such as acting as a gathering place, council chamber, and courthouse all at once. Nonetheless, there may be a large number of god statues exhibited in wall niches. Larger houses of Christian worship were designed using this style of construction under Constantine and his successors, probably because the basilica form allowed for huge audiences and had fewer connotations with pagan architecture than the forms of traditional Greco-Roman temples. Due to the construction projects undertaken by the Christian Roman emperors, the word basilica subsequently evolved to refer mostly to a huge church or cathedral. Emperor Maxentius started building the northern part of the forum in 308 AD, and Constantine I finished it in 312 following loss of Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. Situated between the Temple of Peace, which was likely neglected at the time, and the Temple of Venus and Rome, whose renovation was a result of efforts of Maxentius, the edifice rose on the north side of the Via Sacra. In the sixth century, the structure was referred to as templum Romae. #History #Architecture
