Developed inside the walls of the Roman Saxon Shore fort of Portus Adurni at Portchester, east of Fareham in Hampshire, Portchester Castle is a medieval stronghold. Portchester was brought under royal authority in 1154, and the keep was most likely constructed as a baronial stronghold in the late 11th century. For numerous centuries, the castle was under the royal authority, and King John particularly enjoyed using it as a hunting lodge. The French besieged and took control of it in 1216, but it was soon brought back under English rule. Having a prominent location near the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor, Portchester was a significant port during the Middle Ages. The fortress saw the start of several excursions into France by kings of England. During the first part of the fourteenth century, Edward II invested £1,100 in restoring and fortifying Portchester Castle in preparation for a French invasion. The play by Shakespeare Henry V tells the story of the discovery of a plot to assassinate Henry V and the capture of those responsible at Portchester. Eventually in its past, the castle served as a jail. Currently, Portchester Castle is a Grade I listed structure and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The Southwick Estate has owned the castle since the seventeenth century, but English Heritage is in charge of its management and it is always open to tourists.
