The abandoned stronghold known as Dudley Castle is located in the English West Midlands town of Dudley. Constructed shortly after the Norman Conquest as a wooden motte and bailey fortress, it was rebuilt as a stone structure in the eleventh century and later dismantled by Henry II of England. Beginning in the latter part of the thirteenth century, John Dudley rebuilt the castle, completing the construction of several structures inside the walls. During the English Civil War, the Parliament of England ordered the defenses to be slighted, and in 1750, a fire destroyed the residential buildings. The location was utilized for pageants and fêtes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, its grounds are home to Dudley Zoo. William Camden, the antiquarian, asserted that a Mercian duke by the name of Dodo, or Doddo, built a fortress at Dudley in 700. This assertion was subsequently echoed in several histories and articles. Modern historians, on the other hand, generally date the castle from shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066, thus they do not take this claim seriously. The original fortress is said to have been constructed in 1070 by Ansculf de Picquigny, one of the adherents of the Conqueror. The castle was in the possession of William Fitz-Ansculf, son of Ansculf, according to the Domesday Book, when it was surveyed in 1086. There are still remnants of this castle-earthworks, most notably the motte, the enormous hill that the current castle keep is perched atop. Nonetheless, the first castle was probably made of wood and is no longer standing. The Paganel family acquired the castle after Fitz-Ansculf and constructed the first stone fortress there. Army of King Stephen besieged this stronghold in 1138, but it was resilient enough. But in 1173, Gervase Paganel joined an unsuccessful uprising against King Henry II, and the king ordered the castle to be destroyed. Following the death of his uncle Gervase Paganel in 1194, Ralph de Somery I of Somery dynasty came to hold the land. In 1262, Roger de Somery II began work on restoring the fortress. After Roger de Somery II died in 1272, the castle was still under construction, and heirs of Roger continued work on it until the 14th century. This rebuilding is when the main gate and the keep were built. #Castles #History #Architecture
