The Arch of Augustus is a gate that was once part of city wall of Rimini, Emilia-Romagna. It is designed to resemble an old Roman triumphal arch. The arch, which was erected in 27 BC as a tribute to the first Roman emperor Augustus, denotes the northern terminus of the Via Flaminia, the route that Gaius Flaminius built between Ariminum and Rome in 220 BC. In Italy, the Arch of Augustus is the oldest arch still standing. It is one of most recognizable emblems of Rimini, along with the Ponte di Tiberio, and is shown on the coat of arms of the city. Numerous armies have gone by the Arch of Augustus due to the city-location at the point of an important north-south route by the Adriatic Sea. Scholars contest that the arch was meant to be a triumphal arch, as it essentially serves as a city gate. Building of the arch took place concurrently with the Via Flaminia being restored and Ariminum being renamed Colonia Augusta Ariminensis, thus tying the city to Augustus. Among the buildings in Ariminum with the most exquisite decorations were those close to the arch. The arch most likely took the place of an earlier, poorly known gate. Thick cement would have covered the previous gate. Built when Ariminum was founded in 268 BC, square defensive guard towers stood on either side of the Arch of Augustus at its dedication. Coins found during excavations in the 1980s indicate that the earliest wallsof the arch made of yellow sandstone were constructed about the third century BC. The stone walls with drainage arches replaced the sandstone walls in the third century AD. During the last stage of building, which took place in the third or seventh century, seven-sided stone towers were erected in place of the ancient ones. These towers included an outside stone casing and a brick core made of stone chips combined with mortar. They most certainly reached the height of the arch before being raised in later years, and they are widely credited to redesign of the urban fortifications of the city by Emperor Aurelian. #History #Architecture
