In Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, North Hylton neighbourhood of England, sits the stone castle known as Hylton Castle. The Hilton family first constructed it in wood soon after the Norman Conquest in 1066. Later, in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, it was rebuilt in stone. The 18th century saw significant renovations to both the inside and outside of the castle, which continued to serve as the chief residence of Hylton family until the last Baron passed away in 1746. After that, it was Gothicized but remained unmaintained until 1812, when a new owner gave it fresh life. It was once more abandoned until the 1840s, when it was briefly converted into a school until being bought out once more in 1862. Early in the 20th century, the location was acquired by a nearby coal company, and in 1950, the state took control of it. The array of heraldic devices that have been preserved from the original construction of the castle, primarily on the west façade, is one of its most notable aspects. They give an estimated date for the castle-rebuilding from wood to stone and show the coats of arms of the local gentry and peers from the late 14th to the early 15th century. English Heritage is a charity that looks after historical landscape of England, and they own the castle. A community organization is responsible for maintaining the parkland around it. As a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed structure, the castle and its chapel are safeguarded. With a £2.9 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant and a £1.5 million Sunderland Council grant, plans were unveiled in February 2016 to convert the castle into a community hub and tourist destination. The facilities would include classrooms, a cafe, and spaces for meetings, exhibitions, and events. #History #Architecture #Castles
