Greek, Persian, and Egyptian gardening practices inspired Roman gardens. Every farm in ancient Latium had a garden. Every garden should include flower beds and decorative trees, and it should be located close to the home, according to Cato the Elder. According to Horace, flower gardens became a national pastime during his lifetime. The very wealthy were not the only ones with gardens. Pompeiian excavations reveal that gardens attached to homes were reduced in size to accommodate the space needs of typical Roman household or Insulae. Roman colonies in Africa, Gaul, and Britain adopted modified versions of Roman garden patterns. These urban gardens gave way to window boxes or roof gardens as tall insulae replaced town residences. #History#Architecture
