Situated atop the hill bearing the same name in Veliko Tarnovo, northern Bulgaria, lies the medieval fortification known as Tsarevets. Tsarevets is situated 206 meters above the ocean. In addition to hosting the royal and patriarchal palaces, it functioned as the principal stronghold and main bulwark of the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1185 until 1393. It is a well-liked tourist destination. The hill has been inhabited by people from the second millennium BC, according to historical records. It was established in the 4th century, and toward the end of the 5th century, a Byzantine city—tentatively identified with Zikideva—was built. This served as the foundation for the construction of the Bulgarian fortress, which started in the 12th century. The stronghold rose to prominence after the Second Bulgarian Empire was founded, with Veliko Tarnovo serving as its capital. Its magnificence has been likened to that of Rome and Constantinople. The Bulgarian Empire came to an end on July 17, 1393, when the stronghold was ultimately captured and set ablaze by Ottoman forces after three months of siege. There are three ways to go inside. On the easternmost side of the hill is where the main entrance is situated. The two battle towers, the north and south entrances, and an internal stone wall encircle the castle complex, which is situated in the center. It is made up of the room of the king, the castle church, and the throne hall. In honor of the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state-founding, the restoration of the fortification Tsarevets was finished in 1981. Work on the project started in 1930. It was the residence of Kings Petar, Asen, Kaloyan, and Ivan Asen the Second. In the fourteenth century, the castle was the largest. #Castles #History #Architecture
