Cardiff Castle is a Victorian Gothic revival pmansion and medieval castle situated in city center of Cardiff, Wales. On top of a Roman fort from the third century, the original motte and bailey castle was constructed by Norman conquerors in the late eleventh century. The castle, which served as the focal point of both the Marcher Lord domain of Glamorgan and the medieval town of Cardiff, was built either by Robert Fitzhamon or William the Conqueror. Robert of Gloucester most likely started the stone reconstruction of the castle in the twelfth century, adding substantial defensive wall and a shell keep. In the latter part of the thirteenth century, the 6th Earl of Gloucester carried out more work. Cardiff Castle was frequently involved in the battles between the Welsh and Anglo-Normans. It was stormed in 1404 during the insurrection of Owain Glyndŵr, and it was attacked multiple times in the 12th century. The 13th Earl of Warwick acquired the castle in 1423, following several centuries of control by the de Clare and Despenser famalies. Warwick built the principal quarters on the west side of the castle, which is dominated by a tall octagonal tower, after undertaking considerable work on the castle. The castle lost its status as a Marcher domain after the Wars of the Roses, and its military importance started to wane. When the Herbert family acquired the land in 1550, they remodeled several of the major lodgings and built new structures in the outer bailey, which was later home to Shire Hall of Cardiff and other structures. Cardiff Castle was first held by a Parliamentary force during the English Civil War, but Royalist backers were able to retake it in 1645. A Royalist force assaulted Cardiff in an attempt to retake the castle when fighting broke out again in 1648, which resulted in the Battle of St. Fagans, which took place just outside the city. Rather than being demolished by Parliament following the conflict, Cardiff Castle was garrisoned, most likely to fend against a prospective Scottish invasion. The Marquesses of Bute,of the Stuart dynasty, acquired Cardiff Castle in the middle of the eighteenth century. The 4th Marquess of Bute inherited the castle at the early 20th century, and building work went on until the 1920s. Until the Second World War, not much remained of the Bute holdings and surrounding business interests in Cardiff, save for the castle. #History #Architecture #Castles
