Located in the commune of Courcy, in the southern region of the French département of Calvados, stands the dilapidated Château de Courcy. Despite being placed to the monument historique registry by the French Ministry of Culture in 1975, the building, which is representative of military construction from the 12th and 13th centuries, is in risk because there are no safeguards in place. It is likely that soil and timber were used to build initial Courcy-castle. Only the last of the three enceintes that made up the original design of the fortification still stands. The remnants of the Saint Catherine chapel, which dates to the 12th century but underwent significant remodeling in the 15th and 16th centuries, are located elsewhere in the enceinte. Robert Curthose, sometimes known as Courteheuse, stormed the castle of Richard de Courcy in 1091. It was again destroyed by command of Richelieu at the beginning of the 17th century, and after losing all military use, it gradually turned into an agricultural endeavor. The remnants of the old castle, such as the gate leading to the second enceinte and the gate on the road from Tôtes, were included to the supplemental inventory of historical sites in 1975, providing protection for them.
