The Sassanid-era archeological complex known as the Fire Temple of Isfahan is situated on the same-named hill approximately eight kilometers west of the Iranian city center of Isfahan. The remains of a citadel consisting of roughly twenty buildings are located on the southern face of the hill. Many of these buildings, especially those in the lower half of the cluster, are only visible as foundation traces. A number of the structures in the cluster feature the traditional chartaq or four-arch, a floor layout that is typical of Zoroastrian fire temples from the third century onward. Sacred fires were kept in these actual atashgahs. There are further structures that might have served as dwelling quarters and storage spaces for priests and affluent pilgrims. On the very top of the same hill are the remnants of a circular building that resembles a tower, which is another characteristic of the complex. The local population refers to this building, which was once at least twenty meters high, as the Burj-i Gurban, Burj-i Kurban, or Tower of Sacrifice. It seems to have been a military watchtower with a flare that could be lighted to alert an enemy coming. In both instances, a clay-reed combination holds the baked brick walls that remain intact. The hill, which rises roughly 210 meters above the surrounding plain, was formerly known as Maras or Marabin, after a nearby settlement, and Arab historians refer to the location by that same name. #History #Architecture
