After the Battle of the Hornburg, Théoden, accompanied by Gandalf, journeyed to the remnants of Isengard, where he encountered Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took. He quickly developed a fondness for Merry and showed a keen interest in learning more about the Shire, particularly the Hobbit traditions related to pipe-weed. Traveling to Dunharrow via mountain trails, Théoden arrived to discover the muster of Rohirrim in full progress. That evening, errand riders from Gondor arrived, delivering the Red Arrow, a sign of urgent need and a call to honor the Oath of Eorl. Subsequently, Théoden led six thousand Rohirrim to assist Gondor during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, valiantly charging against the legions of Sauron, where he achieved significant glory by vanquishing a chieftain of the Southrons. He confronted the Witch-king of the nine Ringwraiths and sustained mortal injuries when his horse, Snowmane, fell on him after being startled by the winged mount of Witch-king. He was swiftly shielded by Éowyn and Merry, both of whom had secretly ridden to war. Injuries of Théoden were fatal, and he succumbed on the Pelennor Fields. His remains were preserved in the Hallows of Minas Tirith until Éomer returned with a funeral procession. Théoden was subsequently interred in the Barrowfield outside Edoras, marking the end of the second line of kings. Following his demise, the Rohirrim minstrel Gléowine composed a tribute song for him and the other Kings of Rohan. In one of the early drafts of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, it is noted that Théoden had a daughter named Idis, who frequently appeared alongside her cousin Éowyn but remained silent and was perpetually overshadowed by her.
