In Rome, Italy, there is an old Roman temple called the Temple of Portunus. It was constructed next to oldest river port of Rome, Portus Tiberinus, the oldest stone bridge over the Tiber River, the Pons Aemilius, and the Forum Boarium, the Roman cattle market connected to Hercules. Although the exact dedication is unknown because there were multiple other temples in the vicinity besides his, it was most likely dedicated to the gateway deity Portunus. It is still more commonly known by its Renaissance misidentification as the Temple of Fortuna Virilis. Of all the Roman temples, this one is among the best preserved. The primary shrine in the city was devoted to Portunus, the deity of keys, doors, and livestock and thus to granaries. The temple was transformed into a Christian church honoring Santa Maria Egyziaca throughout the Middle Ages. Before being deconsecrated, stripped of all later modifications, and restored to its classical look as an archeological monument in the early 20th century, it was still a church. Buildings from the nearby medieval and Renaissance periods were demolished as part of this reconstruction. Rebuilt between 120 and 80 BC, the temple was first constructed in the third or fourth century BC. Retaining a flight of steps, the rectangular building with its tetrastyle portico and cella are elevated on a high podium. Similar to the Maison Carrée at Nîmes, it features a pronaos portico with two columns deep and four Ionic columns wide. While the four columns at the back and the other five on the long sides are half-columns engaged along the cella-walls, the portico-columns are free-standing. #History #Architecture #Temples
