The entire battle, from the clash on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm to the demise of Gandalf and the Balrog, had taken ten days. However, spirit of Gandalf did not permanently leave Middle-earth at this point. According to him, darkness took him and strayed out of thought and time. He wandered far on roads that he would not tell. Eru sent Olórin/Gandalf back to mortal lands, transforming him back into Gandalf as he was the only one of the five Istari to remain faithful to his mission. However, he was given the ability to show off more of his inner Maiar strength because he was now the only Valar emissary to Middle-earth. Throughout the rest of his tenure in Middle-earth, he rarely used the naked power that was inside him because his objective remained essentially the same: to aid and support those who battled Sauron. However, only few of servants of Sauron could withstand the revealed strength of Gandalf once his rage was aroused. Galadriel sent the windlord Gwaihir, Lord of the Eagles, to find him, and he did so three days later. After being transported to Caras Galadhon in Lothlórien, Gandalf received healing, a new staff, and white clothing, transforming him into Gandalf the White. He was very happy to hear that Sam had gone with Frodo but he soon discovered that Frodo and Sam had left the Fellowship and were trying to reach Mount Doom without the rest.
