After the Baths of Diocletian, the Baths of Caracalla were the second-largest Roman public baths, or thermae, in Rome, Italy. The baths were probably constructed between AD 212/211 and 216/217, when Septimius Severus and Caracalla were in power. Before going into ruin and disuse in the 530s, they were still operational. The Baths of Diocletian, the Basilica of Maxentius, the original Pennsylvania Station in New York City, the Chicago Union Station, and the Senate of Canada Building are just a few of the prominent structures that were inspired by them both during and after their time as baths. Famous sculptures like the Farnese Bull and the Farnese Hercules are among the artworks found in the ruins. Emperor Septimius Severus most likely started the construction of the bath, and his son Caracalla finished them. In AD 216, they were inaugurated. Members of the Severan family commissioned additional construction projects in Regio XII Piscina Publica, the southern part of the city, where the baths were situated. Gaius Asinius Pollio had the Farnese Bull sculpture group to display in his gardens, before it was relocated to the Baths of Caracalla. Caracalla used estate of Pollio to construct his baths; the old buildings were sometimes reduced to their ground floors, filled up with dirt, and used as the foundations for the new complex. A hypocaust, a system of burning wood and coal underground to heat water supplied by a special aqueduct, heated the building. The public were free to use the baths. Known as one of the seven wonders of Rome, the baths were completely operational in the fifth century. Olympiodorus of Thebes mentions a capacity of 1,600. Since the daily capacity is estimated to have been between 6,000 and 8,000 bathers, this is read as referring to the maximum number of simultaneous visitors. The Baths of Caracalla remain a popular tourist destination nowadays. #History #Architecture
