Originally the summer residence of the Mewar royal dynasty, Lake Palace, formerly known as Jag Niwas Palace, is now a hotel. The Lake Palace has a 4-acre natural foundation and is situated on the island of Jag Niwas in Lake Pichola, Udaipur, India. Rana Lakshasimha of the Parmar Rajputs constructed Lake Palace and Pichola Lake in 1362 AD. The 62nd ruler to the Mewar royal family, Maharana Jagat Singh II, of Udaipur, Rajasthan, oversaw the reconstruction of the Lake Palace as a vacation palace between 1743 and 1746, made of white marble. The palace, which was constructed to appear to float in the lane, served as the summer getaway of the Mewar royal family for many years. For the past 50 years, IHCL has been in charge of running the hotel. Due to its appearance and use as a setting for multiple successful films, the palace has achieved international renown. The palace has east-facing design allowed its occupants to offer early morning prayers to the Hindu sun deity Surya. Semi-precious stones and ornate niches embellish the walls, which are composed of black and white marble. Its courtyards are lined with columns, pillared terraces, gardens, and fountains. Maharana Swaroop Singh donated the island as shelter to a number of European families who left Nimach during the famous Indian Sepoy Mutiny in 1857. The Rana burned every boat in the town to keep the rebels from getting to the island and safeguard his guests. The remarkable water palaces of Udaipur were deteriorated by weather and time by the late 19th century. When the Lake Palace Hotel received its five-star rating, Maharana Mahendra Singh, the current ruler of the Mewar dynasty, was in charge of its management. The hotel was taken over by Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces in 1971, and an additional 75 rooms were erected. A second restoration project was started in 2000. #History#Architecture
