Rheinstein Castle is situated near the town of Trechtingshausen in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It was built around the years 1316 to 1317. The castle held significant importance due to its strategic position. However, by 1344, it began to fall into disrepair. By the time of the Palatine War of Succession, the structure was in a state of considerable dilapidation. During the romantic era of the nineteenth century, Prince Frederick of Prussia, 1794–1863, acquired the castle and oversaw its restoration. Burg Rheinstein features a functioning drawbridge and portcullis, which are characteristic elements of medieval castle architecture and fortifications. The castle is accessible to the public. Adjacent to the gift shop at the entrance, there is an opening on the left that leads to the courtyard, which offers views of the Rhine River. The courtyard is referred to as the Burgundy Garden, named after the Burgundy grape vine that flourishes there. This vine, approximately 500 years old, continues to yield grapes. From the garden, steps descend to the castle chapel. The Gothic altar piece within the chapel showcases a woodcarving of Jesus at the Last Supper. Between the rock formation and the chapel, further steps descend to the royal crypt of the family of Prince Frederick William Louis. Ascending towards the Burgundy Garden, another flight of steps leads to the main section of the castle. The most spacious and striking room within Rheinstein Castle is located at the top of the stairway to the left upon entering. Known as the Rittersaal, it features exquisite stained-glass windows and three-dimensional paintings. Rheinstein also accommodates a café and gift shop, which offers miniature handmade wooden treasure chests alongside traditional items such as postcards and guidebooks for sale. From the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries, the castle was granted as a fief by the archbishops of Mainz. In 1842, Rheinstein Castle became the preferred residence of Prince Frederick. Numerous royal figures of that era, including Queen Victoria and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia, were among the esteemed guests of the castle. Prince Frederick commissioned the Wiesbaden architect, Ph. Hoffmann, to create a design for a chapel and crypt. Merely two years later, the neo-Gothic chapel and crypt intended for the royal family were officially inaugurated. In the 1980s, the castle was transferred to the Rhine Family, who subsequently donated it to the government for use as a museum. #History #Castles #Architecture
